Fishbone Stepped Stitch
The Fishbone Stepped Needlepoint Stitch is a variation of the basic fishbone stitch, known for its resemblance to the bones of a fish. In the stepped version, the stitches are arranged in a manner that creates a stepped or staggered effect, giving the design a unique texture and dimension.

Fishbone Stepped Stitch Instructions & Diagram

- Start making a vertical straight stitch by skipping four threads of canvas (from top to bottom) and insert the needle from front to bottom
- Move the needle one intersection of the canvas diagonally up to the left (behind the canvas), make a horizontal straight stitch by skipping two threads of the canvas, then insert the needle and move it four threads of the canvas up (behind the canvas), and insert it from back to front
- When you have done the maximum number of vertical stitches in that diagonal row, at the end of the last cross, move the needle (behind the canvas) three threads of the canvas to the right and one thread down
- Make a horizontal stitch skipping four canvas threads, ending it at the bottom point of the last vertical stitch
- Move the needle three canvas threads to the right and one down, then make a vertical upward stitch skipping two canvas threads. Go down two canvas threads again to start the next cross
- Repeat all steps as many times as needed
