Oatmeal Stitch
The Oatmeal Needlepoint Stitch is a textured stitch that resembles the look of oatmeal, often used for creating subtle backgrounds or adding dimension to needlepoint designs.
Stitch Details
- Stitch Structure: Flat, Pattern, Diagonal
- Related Stitches: Reversed Scotch Stitch, Brighton Stitch
- Recommended for: Large areas, Backgrounds
Oatmeal Stitch Instructions & Diagram

- Insert the needle from the back of the canvas to the front at the starting point
- Perform diagonally upwards to the right a sequence of stitches skipping 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2, and 1 canvas intersection respectively
- At the end of the last stitch of the previous step start again the pattern of the previous step starting from the stitch that skips 2 canvas intersections
- When completing the last stitch of the sequence move the needle 6 canvas threads to the left and one down
- At that point make a sequence of diagonal stitches upward to the left parallel to skip 1, 2, 3, 2, 2, 1 respectively
- At the end of this sequence, move the needle 3 canvas threads to the right and one up (behind the canvas)
- From that point, repeat step number 5
