The Herringbone Needlepoint Stitch creates a distinctive, interlocking pattern resembling the bones of a herring fish. It's often used for borders, edgings, and decorative fills in embroidery projects.

Stitch Details

Herringbone Stitch Instructions & Diagram

You can see the diagram of this stitch below. 

  • Start by making a diagonally downward to the right stitch, skipping two canvas intersections, then move the needle one thread of the canvas to the left (behind the canvas)
  • Make another diagonal stitch upward to the right by skipping two intersections of the canvas, then repeat the needle movement one canvas thread to the left (behind the canvas)
  • Alternate between steps one and two to create the desired pattern
